Reading Rainbow debuted on PBS in 1983. According to Wikipedia the first ever episode aired on June 6 of that year, and I'm fairly certain I started watching it from the beginning.
The theme song was apparently way ahead of its time by being one of the first TV intros to use a synthesizer. That definitely made it super cool in my book.
I remember being a little scared of this episode:

This is not only the dude who wrote the song (I just now learned this tidbit of trivia), but he's a well-respected though somewhat odd jazz singer. The late, great Mel Torme often cited him as a significant influence on his work.
I was actually going to suggest a version by a band called The Swingin' Deacons, but I've never come across a video. But like the Holy Rollers say, "Everything happens for a reason."
Awesome, thanks! Will definitely keep that one on file for sometime in the future...
ReplyDeleteWhen I heard this mentioned on PTI this PM, I immediately thought of you -- is the NFL really considering having Weird Al perform at the Super Bowl?
ReplyDeleteI'd thought the most off-the-beaten-track outfit to get a Super Bowl gig would end up being Big Bad Voodoo Daddy years ago in Denver -- and that was before the entertainment became such a big deal.
I saw that petition for Weird Al, I love it! Not sure the league will actually take it seriously, but it's got over 28,000 signatures so far... https://www.change.org/petitions/nfl-have-weird-al-yankovic-headline-the-super-bowl-xlix-halftime-show
